Calculation breakdown

  • Selected strips run along the entered width.
  • Roll count assumes strips can be joined end-to-end. Add specified end overlaps or choose longer rolls when continuous strips are required.

Layout model and usable dimensions

Fabric coverage is less than the number printed on a roll when neighboring strips overlap. This calculator lays parallel strips across a rectangular area, allows for edge turn-up and checks both possible orientations. It chooses the orientation requiring less total roll length, then rounds the total to full rolls. Pins are estimated from the covered area using your chosen spacing density. This is a layout and purchase estimate; the suitability of fabric beneath gravel, planting beds or paving depends on the system and material specification.

Fit, direction and offcut constraints

  • The tool includes side overlap only; end overlaps need a separate allowance.
  • Pin count by area does not prescribe edge or seam fastening details.
  • A roll shorter than a required strip needs an approved joint or a longer roll.

Layout arithmetic and example

Strip count = round up[(cross dimension + 2 × turn-up − overlap) ÷ (roll width − overlap)]. Compare both orientations by strip count × strip length.

A worked example

For 30 × 12 ft, 4 ft-wide fabric, 6 in overlaps and 3 in turn-up, lengthwise strips require 4 × 30.5 = 122 ft. The rotated layout needs 112.5 ft and is selected.

Measure and compare a layout

  1. Measure the covered rectangle and required edge turn-up.
  2. Enter roll dimensions and side overlap.
  3. Check the chosen strip orientation and any end-join requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Why is nominal roll area too optimistic?

Side overlaps and edge turn-up consume material that does not add new ground coverage.

Does it choose roll direction?

It compares parallel strips along the length and width and uses the smaller total roll length.

Are end overlaps included?

No. If strips must be joined, account for the specified end overlaps separately.
