From measured space to purchasable material
A gravel driveway can use different materials in its base and wearing surface, so a single gravel depth hides important purchase details. This calculator estimates both layers independently across the driveway and an optional rectangular parking apron. Each layer has its own loose-volume factor and bulk density, allowing you to match two supplier quotes. The geometry assumes the apron is additional area rather than overlapping the drive. Layer depths are entered project requirements; the tool does not assess soil, drainage, vehicle loading or local driveway standards.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Measure driveway and any non-overlapping apron.
- Enter designed base and surface depths separately.
- Obtain separate material quantities for the two aggregate grades.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
A 60 × 10 ft drive plus a 12 × 10 ft apron has 720 ft². A 6 in base at 1.2 loose factor requires 16 yd³; a 2 in surface at 1.1 requires 4.89 yd³.
Gravel Driveway: what changes the result?
Compare the layer or product assumptions behind the material order. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driveway length | 60 ft | 72 ft | Combined driveway and apron area: 720 → 840 sq ft Loose base volume: 16 → 18.6667 yd³ |
| Driveway width | 10 ft | 12 ft | Combined driveway and apron area: 720 → 840 sq ft Loose base volume: 16 → 18.6667 yd³ |
| Additional apron length | 12 ft | 14.4 ft | Combined driveway and apron area: 720 → 744 sq ft Loose base volume: 16 → 16.5333 yd³ |
| Additional apron width | 10 ft | 12 ft | Combined driveway and apron area: 720 → 744 sq ft Loose base volume: 16 → 16.5333 yd³ |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- A crowned, tapered or sloped profile may need a section-by-section takeoff.
- Geotextile, excavation and drainage work are not included.
- Repeated maintenance top-ups should be measured independently from the initial full-depth construction.
Frequently asked questions
Does it combine base and top gravel?
No. It reports separate volumes and weights so different materials can be ordered.
Can the apron overlap the driveway?
Do not include overlap. Apron dimensions are treated as entirely additional area.
What depth should a gravel driveway be?
That depends on site and loading conditions. Enter a depth established for your project rather than treating the example as a recommendation.

Plan a gravel driveway takeoff with separate base and surface layers, compacted depths, loose-order factors, density and supplier tonnage units.
