From measured space to purchasable material
A brick wall’s coverage depends on both the brick face and the mortar joint. This calculator builds the modular face from your actual brick dimensions plus the joint, then estimates the number of bricks for the net wall area. It is useful for facing-brick purchase planning when comparing sizes or joint widths. The calculation models a single visible layer in a regular running pattern; double-wythe construction, decorative bonds, returns, piers and arches require additional measurements rather than a larger generic waste factor.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Subtract measured openings from the visible wall area.
- Measure the brick face and choose the planned joint width.
- Check corner returns and special bond pieces separately.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
A 20 × 8 ft face minus 24 ft² openings has 136 ft². Example 7.625 × 2.25 in bricks with 0.375 in joints and 7% allowance require 998 bricks.
Brick: what changes the result?
Compare dimensions and product yields without treating quantities as a design check. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall face length | 20 ft | 24 ft | Net brick face area: 136 → 168 sq ft Bricks including allowance: 998 → 1,233 |
| Wall face height | 8 ft | 9.6 ft | Net brick face area: 136 → 168 sq ft Bricks including allowance: 998 → 1,233 |
| Doors and windows | 24 sq ft | 28.8 sq ft | Net brick face area: 136 → 131.2 sq ft Bricks including allowance: 998 → 963 |
| Actual brick face length | 7.625 in | 9.15 in | Bricks per square foot: 6.8571 → 5.7593 bricks/ft² Bricks including allowance: 998 → 839 |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- Supplier coverage charts may be more precise for a particular brick system.
- Cut patterns and decorative details can change breakage and spare needs.
- A double-layer wall cannot be estimated as a single facing layer.
Frequently asked questions
How many bricks per square foot?
It depends on the face size and joint. With a 7.625 × 2.25 in brick and 0.375 in joints, the example coverage is about 6.86 bricks per ft².
Are windows deducted?
Yes. Enter their combined measured area with other openings.
Is mortar included in the brick order?
Joint thickness affects coverage, but this tool does not calculate mortar volume. Use the separate mortar calculator.
