Calculation breakdown

  • Nominal face dimensions include the intended mortar joint.
  • Core fill uses installed block count, not the extra blocks purchased for waste.

From measured space to purchasable material

Concrete blocks are usually ordered by nominal face coverage rather than their measured solid dimensions. This tool estimates units from a wall’s gross area, subtracts doors or other openings, and adds a breakage allowance. A separate optional core-fill calculation uses an entered fill volume per installed block. This keeps the masonry unit order distinct from grout quantity. Bond beams, corner units, lintels and half blocks can change the final purchase list and should be checked against the wall layout before buying.

Measure, select yield and round the order

  1. Measure wall face area and openings.
  2. Enter nominal modular block face dimensions.
  3. Check special unit types separately from the estimated total.

Net requirement and purchase calculation

Net area = wall length × height − openings. Units = net area × 144 ÷ (nominal block length × nominal block height).

A worked example

A 30 × 6 ft wall minus 12 ft² of openings has 168 ft² of net face. With nominal 16 × 8 in blocks and 5% allowance, purchase 199 blocks.

Concrete Block: what changes the result?

Compare dimensions and product yields without treating quantities as a design check. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.

Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.

Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits

  • This is a face-area estimate rather than a course-by-course bond layout.
  • Core volume depends on the exact block and which cells are filled.
  • Footings, reinforcement and structural capacity are outside this tool.

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter actual or nominal block dimensions?

Enter modular face dimensions including the intended mortar joint. For an 8 × 16 nominal face, use 8 and 16 inches.

Does it count corner blocks?

It estimates total face coverage. Special blocks need a separate layout count.

Does every purchased block need core fill?

No. Optional grout volume is based on estimated installed blocks and the fill volume you enter.

Calculation method: JICWH methodology. Examples are planning assumptions, not product recommendations.
