From measured space to purchasable material
Sandpaper consumption varies with finish, wood, pressure, dust extraction, and the point at which you choose to replace an abrasive. This calculator uses your observed or expected usable area per disc or sheet at each grit stage. Enter the number of stages, the project surface area, and an extra-change allowance to plan a purchase. The result is a consumption estimate, not a prescribed grit sequence. For coated or contaminated surfaces, identify the material and use an appropriate dust-control and preparation method before sanding. A small trial area is the best way to refine the yield input.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Measure every face that will actually be sanded.
- Trial the abrasive to estimate usable area before replacement.
- Enter planned grit stages and check pack sizes for each grit separately.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
120 sq ft, 20 sq ft of usable life per disc, and 15% extra require 7 discs per grit. Three stages need 21 discs, purchased as one 10-disc pack per grit.
Sandpaper Quantity: what changes the result?
Examine physical dimensions, pieces and purchasing constraints together. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface to sand | 120 sq ft | 144 sq ft | Total discs or sheets: 21 → 27 Discs or sheets per grit stage: 7 → 9 |
| Grit stages | 3 | 4 | Total discs or sheets: 21 → 28 Total same-size packs across grits: 3 → 4 |
| Usable area per disc or sheet per stage | 20 sq ft | 24 sq ft | Total discs or sheets: 21 → 18 Discs or sheets per grit stage: 7 → 6 |
| Extra-change allowance | 15 % | 18 % | Total discs or sheets: 21 → 24 Discs or sheets per grit stage: 7 → 8 |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- A coarse removal stage can consume abrasives at a different rate from a finishing stage. Calculate stages separately if their yields differ.
- Worn or clogged abrasive can scratch or heat the surface. Do not treat the estimated yield as a requirement to keep using it.
- This estimate does not identify hazardous coatings or replace appropriate protection and dust controls.
Frequently asked questions
How many sanding discs do I need for a deck?
Use the actual sanding area and the usable life observed on your deck surface. A universal disc-per-square-foot figure is unreliable.
Does three grit stages mean three passes?
It means three separately supplied abrasive grades in this estimate. The work needed at each grade depends on the surface and finish goal.
Why are packs rounded for each grit?
A spare coarse disc cannot replace a needed fine disc. Each grade needs enough of its own stock.
