From measured space to purchasable material
A patio with a contrasting border has two material orders: the field units inside the border and the border units around it. This calculator subtracts the border band from the total rectangle before estimating field pavers. Border units are then counted by their entered coverage along the perimeter, making the assumption visible rather than mixing both sizes in one area rate. The result includes loose field units and full pallet rounding. An installer’s layout can refine corner cuts, patterns and the exact border count.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Measure the outside rectangle and select a border width.
- Enter actual coverage dimensions for field and border products.
- Compare loose unit needs with the supplier’s pallet size.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
A 16 × 12 ft patio with a 6 in border leaves 165 ft² inside. Example 8 × 4 in pavers at 8% cutting allowance require 802 field pavers, or 2 pallets of 480.
Paver: what changes the result?
Compare dimensions and product yields without treating quantities as a design check. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outside paved length | 16 ft | 19.2 ft | Interior field area: 165 → 200.2 sq ft Field pavers with cuts: 802 → 973 |
| Outside paved width | 12 ft | 14.4 ft | Interior field area: 165 → 201 sq ft Field pavers with cuts: 802 → 977 |
| Border band width | 6 in | 7.2 in | Interior field area: 165 → 159.84 sq ft Field pavers with cuts: 802 → 777 |
| Field paver length | 8 in | 9.6 in | Field pavers with cuts: 802 → 669 Loose field-paver estimate: 521.3 → 434.85 USD |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- Complex patterns and angled cuts need a layout-specific cutting allowance.
- Some paver dimensions already include spacing nibs; use the coverage size.
- Base, bedding and joint sand are separate material layers.
Frequently asked questions
Does the border reduce field paver quantity?
Yes. The band is removed from the outside area before field units are counted.
Can I estimate pavers by pallet?
Enter field units per pallet. The tool rounds the field count up to complete pallets.
Are the border corners exact?
No. The centerline count is an order estimate. Corner treatments and bond patterns need a layout check.
