From measured space to purchasable material
A fertilizer label lists nutrient percentages, while a planting plan may state a target amount of nitrogen per unit area. This calculator connects those units: it divides your chosen nitrogen target by the product’s nitrogen fraction to estimate product weight. It also shows the labeled phosphate and potash amounts delivered by that same application. The nitrogen target must come from appropriate soil-test or local guidance, and the product label sets application limits. This is a quantity conversion, not a recommendation to apply fertilizer or increase a label rate.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Obtain a suitable nitrogen target from soil-test or local guidance.
- Enter the product’s complete label analysis.
- Compare calculated product weight against the label’s application limit before use.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
For 1,000 ft² at a chosen 0.5 lb N/1,000 ft², a 20% nitrogen product requires 2.5 lb of product, delivering 0.125 lb labeled phosphate and 0.25 lb labeled potash.
Fertilizer Quantity: what changes the result?
Compare the layer or product assumptions behind the material order. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treatment area | 1,000 sq ft | 1,200 sq ft | Calculated product amount: 2.5 → 3 lb Nitrogen delivered: 0.5 → 0.6 lb |
| Chosen nitrogen per 1,000 ft² | 0.5 lb/1,000 sq ft | 0.6 lb/1,000 sq ft | Calculated product amount: 2.5 → 3 lb Nitrogen delivered: 0.5 → 0.6 lb |
| Label nitrogen (N) | 20 % | 24 % | Calculated product amount: 2.5 → 2.0833 lb Labeled phosphate delivered: 0.125 → 0.1042 lb |
| Label phosphate (P₂O₅) | 5 % | 6 % | Labeled phosphate delivered: 0.125 → 0.15 lb |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- Bag purchase rounding is separate from the amount to apply.
- Nutrient timing, runoff restrictions and product instructions remain important.
- This tool does not recommend a product, rate or treatment schedule.
Frequently asked questions
What does 20-5-10 mean?
It lists weight percentages of nitrogen, labeled phosphate and labeled potash using fertilizer label conventions.
Should I spread the full bag that I buy?
No. Apply only an appropriate amount consistent with the product label and your project guidance.
Does this determine how much nitrogen my lawn needs?
No. You provide that target; the tool only converts it into product quantity.
