From measured space to purchasable material
Plan a drywall purchase by separating the wall surface from an optional ceiling and choosing the sheet dimensions you intend to carry and install. This calculator deducts measured openings, adds a sheet-cutting allowance, and rounds the combined area to whole sheets. It also reports wall and ceiling areas individually so you can divide an order between different board products when needed. The result is an area-based shopping estimate rather than a framing layout. Board orientation, joint placement, fire-rated assemblies, and fastening requirements must be checked against the actual installation specification.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Measure room dimensions and the combined opening area.
- Select whether the same board order includes the ceiling.
- Enter the actual sheet size and a cut allowance that reflects board orientation and access.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
Walls provide 312 sq ft after openings and the ceiling adds 120 sq ft. The combined 432 sq ft becomes 475.2 sq ft with 10% extra, requiring 15 sheets of 32 sq ft.
Drywall Sheet: what changes the result?
Check product dimensions before treating area as a shopping quantity. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room length | 12 ft | 14.4 ft | Whole drywall sheets: 15 → 17 Net wall coverage: 312 → 350.4 sq ft |
| Room width | 10 ft | 12 ft | Whole drywall sheets: 15 → 17 Net wall coverage: 312 → 344 sq ft |
| Wall height | 8 ft | 9.6 ft | Whole drywall sheets: 15 → 18 Net wall coverage: 312 → 382.4 sq ft |
| Opening area | 40 sq ft | 48 sq ft | Net wall coverage: 312 → 304 sq ft |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- Large openings may not save a whole sheet if boards must be cut around them; review the layout before reducing an order.
- Moisture-resistant, fire-resistant, and ceiling board products can have different assembly requirements.
- Tape, compound, corner bead, fasteners, and labor are not included in the board price result.
Frequently asked questions
How many drywall sheets for a 12 by 10 room?
At 8 ft high, with 40 sq ft of openings, the ceiling included, 10% extra, and 4 × 8 ft sheets, the area estimate rounds to 15 sheets.
Can I use 4 by 12 drywall sheets?
Yes. Change the sheet dimensions; also consider access, handling, framing, and joint placement.
Does this provide a drywall hanging layout?
No. It calculates total sheet area and purchasing quantities, not joint positions or fastening schedules.
