From measured space to purchasable material
A sloped ceiling has more paintable surface than its horizontal footprint. This calculator supports a flat rectangle, a single sloping plane, or two symmetric pitched planes. For a symmetric pitch, the rise is measured from each eave to the center ridge and the entered span is the full room width. The sloped area comes from the geometric length of the ceiling surface, then your coverage and coat count determine liquid demand. Enter a coverage appropriate to the selected paint and ceiling texture. Beams, soffits, skylight reveals, and irregular vaults need separate measurements.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Select the ceiling geometry and measure horizontal dimensions.
- For a pitched ceiling, measure rise according to the selected one- or two-plane model.
- Enter texture-appropriate label coverage and desired coats, then round to cans.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
A flat 12 × 10 ft ceiling has 120 sq ft. Two coats at 350 sq ft per gallon, plus 10% extra, need 0.754 gallons, rounded to one 1-gallon can.
Ceiling Paint: what changes the result?
Check how the chosen product changes the order. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ceiling length | 12 ft | 14.4 ft | Ceiling paint requirement: 0.7543 → 0.9051 US gal Actual ceiling surface area: 120 → 144 sq ft |
| Horizontal ceiling span | 10 ft | 12 ft | Ceiling paint requirement: 0.7543 → 0.9051 US gal Actual ceiling surface area: 120 → 144 sq ft |
| Coats | 2 | 3 | Ceiling paint requirement: 0.7543 → 1.1314 US gal Whole cans: 1 → 2 |
| Product coverage rate | 350 ft2/gal | 420 ft2/gal | Ceiling paint requirement: 0.7543 → 0.6286 US gal |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- The rise field is ignored for flat ceilings.
- Heavy texture can reduce coverage; enter the applicable product yield rather than applying a hidden texture multiplier.
- This estimates coating material and does not assess access equipment or safe work methods.
Frequently asked questions
Do I use floor area to estimate a vaulted ceiling?
Floor area understates a sloped ceiling surface. Use the ceiling rise and horizontal run to calculate the actual slope length.
How much ceiling paint for a 12 by 10 room?
For a flat 120 sq ft ceiling, two coats at 350 sq ft per gallon and 10% extra require about 0.754 gallons.
Does the calculator include walls above the normal ceiling line?
No. Gable walls and vertical sections need their own wall-area measurement.

- How Much Paint for a Room with Doors, Windows, and Two Coats?
Measure net wall area, separate ceiling and trim paint, apply real product coverage, and round a two-coat room estimate to cans.
